10-17-2021 Falling

Well, we talk about Linda falling, but a week ago Saturday I fell flat on my face on concrete.  Broke my nose, sprained my wrist and little finger, twisted my knee and bruised my ribs.  I hurt all over.  Was in ER all day for x-rays, CT scans, etc.  Got some codeine. Good grief.

Then today I arrive at NHC and the nurse tells me that Linda fell again this morning.  When I got there, she was in bed and refusing food. 

Some days it is just hard to cope.

8/28/2021 A good day for physical therapy

 (Marilyn) I got there at my usual time -- 8:30AM.  On Saturday the regular physical therapy people are sometimes not there. When I walked in the room, a therapist named Crystal was there and was getting Linda ready to head out for her session.  Crystal stepped out of the room to get a walker and Linda told me she really liked Crystal.  Crystal was able to get Linda to stand up with almost no help.  Then they walked down the hall and then walked back.  She had Linda sit down on the wheelchair for a brief rest and then get herself standing again.  They walked down the hall and back again.  Then Crystal had Linda practice going from a sitting to standing position several times.   The lady across the hall was in her screaming mood again and she came to the door of Linda's room and Linda told Crystal she wouldn't do any more therapy with "that woman" staring at her and screaming.  So Crystal closed the door. 1-11-2022 - Update (Lucky, lucky Linda)

  (Tricia) I noted at the end of my last post that NHC had called to let me know that Linda had fallen again. According to the nurse, Linda had walked to the hall (without a walker, of course) and sat in one of the nurse's chairs near her doorway; then, she decided she needed to walk around, and that's when she took her tumble near the nursing station, apparently right in front of the facility doctor. When Ed and I visited her tonight, she was crying and saying she was in a lot of pain. Her right hip, she said, hurt a great deal every time she moved. We were almost certain that this time she really had broken a bone as a result of a fall. Although Linda was crying, she asked us, "Aren't you glad you came to visit tonight, so you could be here to hear all of this?"  She might have been in pain, but at least she kept some of her sense of humor. :-)  The mobile X-ray technician didn't come until around a quarter until 9:00, and initially the X-ray was inconclusi...

1-17-2022 It has been quiet since Christmas

  A frosty morning in our backyard last week.   (Tricia) Linda has been slowing down since Christmas, with the exception of last week, when she had a few days where she seemed to have more energy. She even managed to recall events in a way that she had not been able to before. Not only that, she actually agreed (and, in one instance, asked) to do her exercises, and did a good 15 minutes of simple strength moves on three different days last week, which surprised me! We attributed that to the fact that we have suspended one of her more sedating medications--the one controlling her heart rate--at the recommendation of her primary care doctor. He thought it might help her regain some of her energy. Because the medication stays in the system for a couple of months, it is safe to stop for a short period of time. Last week, we also rented a wheelchair-accessible van to get Linda to her follow-up appointment with her infectious disease doctor and nurse practitioner (one for C.diff, on...
